Trainers Who Send Just One Horse To A Meeting

In Uk Horse Racing it is often judged by punters a positive sign if a trainer sends just one horse to a meeting. The assumption made may be that if he is going to the expense and trouble to transport just one horse all the way to a course he must have good reason.

Is this just an old wives tale or is there some truth in it?

Dave Renham from PunterProfits.com trawled through about 5 years of National Hunt Horse Racing Results to try and get to the truth of things.

He made the assumption that each trainer would take a different attitude so he researched everything on a trainer by trainer basis.

For members over there he produced a downloadable spreadsheet with all the key facts and info such as strike rates and return on investment listed.

The full spreadsheet can be downloaded at the link below.

Note however you have to be a full member of punterprofits.com to get it.

In respect to Dave and the members there I don’t want to detail all his research here however here are a few selected facts from his research for two of the top National Hunt Trainers

Trainer Runners Wins Strike rate (%) Profit ROI (%)
PF Nicholls 354 114 32.2 £24.04 6.8
D Pipe 268 62 23.1 £38.51 14.4

( ROI = Return On Investment .. a measure of profitability )

As you can see if one of these two trainers sends just one horse to a meeting it can indeed be taken as a positive sign.

Word of warning however .. not all trainers think the same way.

Dave’s fuller research details where this can be taken as a positive sign and where it should be ignored.

Interestingly it is even more positive than the above with some of the mid range / not so well known  trainers.

If you have been burnt by so called miracle systems and the sellers who hype them up you may start to come round to the conclusion that the only way to get ahead in your racing betting  is via knowledge and hard work.

If you have reached that stage of your racing betting career yet the continual research carried out by Dave over at PunterProfits.com should be of interest to you in keeping you ahead of the field on the Exchanges.

Stranraer WIN  (vs. Elgin City) – 1 star bet.

@13/8 Ladbrokes or slightly better 7/5 Bet365

Elgin City vs. Stranraer  Scot Div 3

Elgin city have been great away but not so good at home, they’ve had their confidence shaken in recent games by loses to Forfar and Livingston. To compound that, they’ve also got a bit of a bug running through the team. While Stranraer are no world beaters, they’re a team capable of winning this and 13/8 represents decent value.

Wolverhamton 1.20
BOLODENKA 11/2 CoralWilliam Hill VC
Win Bet

BOLODENKA is 11/2 but also the outsider in a small
4 runner race. I think he ran well last time and it did
give me some encouragement that he can win this. I
could be made to look silly as his trainer also has the
favourite today in the race. I think the favourite has
an unimpressive profile. All 4 winners have chances
in this race so no negatives at all but BOLODENKA
has been brilliant placed rated 85 and facing only a
0-74 handicap and you can go back years for the last
time he ran against such low rated horses.

WOLVERHAMPTON 1.20

£32 Free At 32Red.com Handicap
(CLASS 4) (3yo+ 0-87) 1m141y

11/8 Bawaardi, 7/2 Justcallmehandsome
11/2 Bolodenka, 11/2 Quick Release.

The 1st thing that crossed my mind was that we had
a class horse in BOLODENKA rated 85 having had a
rating of 95 recently – Taking on a 0-74 class field.

That makes BOLODENKA look better class than
these and brilliantly placed. The flaw in the argument
is whether BOLODENKA is able to run to his mark
and there is a doubt about that. Throw in the added
complication that Richard Fahey his trainer also has
the favourite BAWAARDI in the race. Statistically
I am opposing BAWAARDI. I looked at all similar
handicaps at this time of year. Horses like him who
came from 3yo handicaps had a poor 2-56 record
and both winners had 9 + runs and he has 6 and they
also had form in Class 2 races before and he doesnt
so I think BAWAARDI is vulnerable. He has had a
recent run but no 3yo won with a recent run anyway
and I am opposing him. The issue for me is whether
BOLODENKA can beat the two other horses. Both
have ability and are capable of winning a race like
this. Neither of them have the class that He has.
He comes from one of the better Claiming races
which relaxes me a bit. I think BOLODENKA has
to be the bet as he must be in the easiest race he has
ran in for a long time.

SELECTION – BOLODENKA

67 Year Old Scores £500 Winner

67 YEAR OLD FOOTBALLER SCORES £500 WINNER
AMATEUR FOOTBALLER John O’Brien had always been proud of his record of having scored goals for his club in five consecutive decades up to and including the 1990s, but it looked as though the ‘noughties’ would end without John adding that vital sixth decade goal to his record – until he set up a bet that he could do it.
At the start of the 2009/10 season, John, a retired city trader, from Ewell in Surrey, by now 67 years old, contacted bookies William Hill to ask them to accept a bet of £20 at odds of 25/1 on his behalf, that he would manage to grab the vital goal before the end of the calendar year 2009, but he had failed to do so until he lined up on Sunday, December 13, for Old Salesians Veterans against National Physical Laboratories.
Playing in the back four, John suddenly spotted a goalscoring opportunity during the second half as the opposition keeper missed a cross from the wing, which dropped over his head, and at John’s feet – enabling him to crash the ball home from barely a yard out – winning him £500 and setting a possible all-time football record of scoring in six consecutive decades for the same club. To add to John’s delight, Old Salesians went on to win the match 5-3.
‘We take thousands of off-beat football bets every season but I believe this is a unique achievement by John, who fully deserves his £500 winnings, which, incredibly, he is donating to club funds – apart from enough to take his wife (who actually placed the bet for him to avoid John contravening FA rules on betting) out for a slap-up meal. I expect he’ll also want to arrange another bet that he can score in the next decade, too, but we might not be so generous this time. I suspect he might end up in the Guinness Book of World Records as a result of this feat!’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.

100/1 Giggs Kicks Button And Bookies

100/1 RYAN GIGGS EXTENDS CURSE OF SPORTS PERSONALITY FAVOURITE…….

ONE William Hill punter lost £24,500 and another £5000 in bets on odds on favourite Jenson Button who became the fourth consecutive beaten favourite, as Ryan Giggs, originally a 100/1 shot, won the BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year Award.
‘There was a massive gamble on Ryan Giggs winning which saw his odds slashed from 100/1 to 5/2 second favourite – and cost bookies a small fortune’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.
WAYNE ROONEY has been installed 6/1 joint favourite by William Hill along with Andy Murray and Lewis Hamilton to win the 2010 BBC TV Sports Personality of the Year Award. ‘If England even go close to winning the World Cup it will almost certainly be a footballer who wins the Award next year’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Sharpe.
Hills also offer 8/1 David Beckham; 12/1 David Haye; Jenson Button; 25/1 Lee Westwood; 33/1 Amir Khan; 40/1 Ricky Hatton; 50/1 Mark Cavendish and Bradley Wiggins.

RAFA 5/4 TO GO BEFORE NEXT SEASON

RAFA BENITEZ is 5/4 to leave Liverpool before the start of next season with William Hill who still make him an odds-on shot at 4/7 to stay in charge of the club: ‘Still the fans haven’t turned against Rafa so the chances are he will survive – always assuming Liverpool can continue at least challenging for a top four place’ said Hill’s spokesman Graham Srpe.
Hills now make Liverpool 8/11 NOT to finish in the top four, and Even money do so.
Torres is 1/9 with Hills still to be at Anfield on the first day of next season, 5/1 to have parted.
