Do Football Gods Have More Heartbreak For England Fans In 2012?
2011 was hardly a vintage year for British football, highlighted by the lack of trinkets and nominations for the BBC Sports Personality, but William Hill think that 2012 could be different, offering 7/2 that any footballer wins the 2012 award. With the European Championships taking place in the Summer of 2012, Hills currently make England 7/1 to win the favourites behind Spain 9/4, Germany 7/2 and level with Holland. Germanys Mario Gomez is the 7/1 favourite to be the tournaments leading goalscorer just ahead of David Villa, currently out with a fractured leg, at 9/1. Hills also offer 250/1 that the competitions final is contested between England and the Republic of Ireland.
With the Euros taking place in an Olympic year, it will be very difficult for the England players to steal the limelight unless they were to win the tournament, said Hills spokesman Joe Crilly. We think that there are teams more well suited to winning and it could well be another season of heartbreak for English football fans.
William Hill are also offering 11/4 that 2012 is the year that Sir Alex Ferguson finally steps down from his seat at Manchester United and having experienced tricky starts to their careers Hills offer 4/1 that Fernando Torres returns to Liverpool and 11/2 that Andy Carroll goes back to Newcastle. The record for goals in a Premier League game is 9 and Hills go 10/1 that this is broken in 2012, while 25/1 is offered for any player to break the record of five goals scored by an individual in a single game.
