Manchester City take on Chelsea in the traditional season curtain raiser – the Community Shield and William Hill make the League Champions 4/6 to lift the trophy and 13/10 to win in 90 minutes. Of the previous five Community Shield winners, four of them have gone on to win the Premier League and William Hill are 2/1 that this year’s winner will also lift the big prize at the end of the season. Chelsea are 11/10 to lift the trophy.

“The season’s curtain raiser is often a good indicator as to who will go on to dominate throughout the course of the season and if you think Manchester City will win the double, this is a good time to get 2/1 about them winning the league,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

Robin van Persie is 6/4 to start Manchester United’s first game of the season amidst talk that Wayne Rooney has told him to join him at Old Trafford, while Manchester City also appear to be closing in on their latest big money signing. Daniel Agger is 10/3 to have moved to Manchester City by the start of the 2012/13 season.

Allen Unlikely To Push Liverpool To The Summit

Liverpool have reportedly had a bid for Swansea midfielder Joe Allen rejected as Brendan Rodgers goes back to his old club to pick up the midfield maestro. Spain became double European Champions and all eyes will turn to the World Cup in Brazil. William Hill make Spain 2/7 to win their qualifying group and 6/4 to do so without losing a game. Once they touch down in Brazil, the Spaniards are 11/2 joint second favourites to win. Spain have now won three major tournaments in a row and are 20/1 to carry on winning tournaments until at least the World Cup in 2018.

Rio Odds On To Never Don The Three Lions Again

The decision to leave Rio Ferdinand out of the England squad, despite the catalogue of injuries, has stirred consternation amongst the masses and William Hill think that this could be the final nail in the long serving defender’s international coffin. He is 4/9 to never play for England again and 4/1 to announce his international retirement before the start of the 2012/13 Premier League season.

“Rio is a veteran of over 80 England caps but it looks like he will fail to add to his impressive tally,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

Hills are now betting on when Ferdinand will retire from football completely and offer 10/1 that he does so this year. Ferdinand fans need not worry, however as the odds of 6/4 suggest it is much more likely he is still playing in 2015.

“Players often add a couple of years to their playing careers by retiring from international football and Rio’s omission could be a blessing in disguise,” said Crilly.

James Milner and Joleon Lescott took the press conference today and while Lescott looks certain to start, James Milner looks less likely, with William Hill making him 4/9 to start the match on the bench (13/8 to start match on pitch). With Roy Hodgson confirming that Wayne Rooney will not be taking part in any of the game on Saturday, Hills are betting on who will start up front and with Danny Welbeck suffering with a slight injury, Hills make Andy Carroll 1/6 to lead the line, while Jermain Defoe is 6/4 to do so.
