Bookmakers William Hill were burned by an Ayrshire punter who made a profit of £39,000 by backing Scotland to defeat Cyprus to the tune of £30,000. The gutsy punter walked into an Ayrshire shop and placed the bet at odds of 13/10 and in doing so, placed the biggest ever bet that Hills have taken on Scotland to win a match.
“When we heard about the bet, we were very surprised as this unknown Scottish punter was willing to risk such a large stake on a nothing friendly, but Craig Levein’s men have done the job and in the process, more than doubled this punter’s cash,” said Hill’s spokesman Joe Crilly.

Scotland suffered last minute heartbreak against Czech Republic at Hampden Park on Saturday and all eyes will turn to the referee against Lithuania this week. It was close but England managed to avoid many of the big guns and found themselves in a relatively easy group for the World Cup 2014 qualifiers and William Hill have cut their odds from 16/1 to 14/1 to win the competition outright.
